Average musician in a band setting will play all the time. They play on the intro. Then on verse 1. Then the pre-chorus. Then the chorus. Then verse 2. Then pre-chorus 2. And chorus 2. And the bridge, playing aggressively. Then the chorus, playing lightly. Then hard on the double chorus. Finally, playing on the outro.
It’s fun to do. Not so fun to listen to.
In contrast, the ABOVE average musician will “edit their playing” (in the words of one of the gifted guitar players in our worship band said) . They don’t play all the time. Shoot — sometimes they won’t play for a whole song.
Check out this visualization of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, 1st Movement. Notice which how often some instruments play — or don’t play. Interesting to watch play out.
“WOW! Look at how many whole rests that guy is playing, and all together?!, WICKED!”
